WEST GERMAN "JAPANESE DECO" VASE
Studio ceramics produced in Germany from the late 1950’s through the 1970’s are often described as “Hot Lava” because of their highly textured surfaces, often in shades of scalding orange and various shades of brown.
This very subtle and elegant vase is surprisingly produced within the aesthetic context of “Hot Lava” with the typical underside markings of numbers and “W. Germany”.
Underneath a thick but translucent white icing-like glaze is a matte charcoal surface revealed by an abstract pattern of intersecting lines that recalls Asian-inspired Art Deco aesthetics. Perhaps the most surprising element is that the rim and interior of this vase are a lovely peacock blue/teal color. How do you say “marvelous exception” in German?
Excellent Condition.
