Caviar20 recently exhibited one of Don Howell's cocktail tables at ArtToronto. Many visitors admiringly compared Howell to George Nakashima.

While their are some basic similarities upon first impression, Howell's creations are far more expressive and unique. Howell carefully seeks out large cuts of wood with dramatic figuration, color and grain irregularities; often from an array of locations across the United States. (George Nakashima used Pennsylvanian walnut almost exclusively)

Another marked characteristic of Howell's can be seen underneath his tables.  

The asymmetrical and overlapping walnut-stilt bases are sculptural and airy, highlighting the dramatic yet natural wood above.  

Don Howell’s first career was in the fashion world, including 9 years as Design Director at John Varvatos. In 2009, he resigned from this major position to dedicate himself to the creation of studio furniture.

An expert craftsman, Howell has spent the last few years refining his techniques and aesthetic, slowly hand-making heirloom-quality furniture for his friends and family using the finest hardwoods and burls.
