RICHARD ARTSCHWAGER “LIEBESPAAR” (LOVERS), 2005
During his late twenties Richard Artschwager (b.1923-2013) studied in Paris with Amedee Ozenfant, yet it wasn’t until the early 1960’s that he devoted himself to his practice, after nearly a decade as a successful Modernist furniture designer and vendor.
Working in several different medium, including formica, Artschawager’ early practice vacillated until he refined his output.
In 1965 famed dealer Leo Castelli presented the first solo show of his work.
Over the course of his long career Artschwager has frequently returned to theme of architecture, furniture and the human experience through figuration and abstraction.
Today his works can be found in the collections of most major institutions, including the Museum of Modern Art which owns over 30 works.
He is represented by several galleries around the world including Xavier Hufkens in Brussels.
