FRANK STELLA "NEW MADRID" LITHOGRAPH, 1971

$4,000

We are excited to be offering for the first time an example from Frank Stella's legendary "Benjamin Moore" series.

The collection of six lithographs was directly based on the eponymous paintings from 1961. The paintings done in Stella's signature geometries were realized using 'direct from the can' household paints from Benjamin Moore.

Working as a printmaker, Stella employed a similar approach by using unblended pure inks. These lithographs were also created by Stella drawing directly onto lithographic stones, rather than metal plates.

Stella's work references many of the key developments or movements in post-war American painting; geometric abstraction, Op Art, hard-edge abstraction and Minimalism.

These prints were made at an important professional peak for the artist: In 1970 the Museum of Modern Art, New York presented a retrospective of Stella's work making him the youngest artist at the time to receive such a distinction.

Stella began working in printmaking in the mid-sixties, with Gemini G.E.L., and it would continue to be an important part of his practice.
