Josef Albers' biography neatly encapsulates the development of 20th century art and design.

The combination of his contributions, influence and affiliations is amazingly comprehensive.

Albers was not only a student at the first Bauhaus working with Johannes Itten, but would later be promoted to professor. His colleagues included Paul Klee and Wassily Kandinsky.

In 1933, after the Bauhaus was shut down by the Nazis, Albers immigrated to the United States. For the rest of his life he balanced teaching with his own artistic practice. Some of his notable proteges include Cy Twombly, Robert Rauschenberg and Eve Hesse.

Albers is best known for his "Hommage to the Square" series.

The influence of Bauhaus is apparent; simplicity of lines, absence of ornamentation and purity of color. Begun in 1949, Albers would faithfully, almost obsessively, explore the relationship of color and form through this series. His explorations influenced both hard edge abstract painting and minimalism.

"I SC" is both an icon of 20th century art, a paradigm of Albers' work and a powerful decorative emblem. A perfect example of Albers work where a square of royal blue intersects with a larger square of sea green creating a concession of both colors in the middle.
