FORNASETTI "LA GIOCONDA" RIPPLE DISH
One of the most interesting and unique examples from Fornasetti's oeuvre are his "Opera Program" ceramic plates.
Fornasetti was fascinated by the pleasures of daily life; eating, drinking, music, smoking and Italian culture.
Trompe d'oeil (which roughly translates as 'trick of the eye') is also a regular part of his work.
His "Opera Program" pieces attempt to be a rippled, used opera program...but they are actually made of ceramic and are gilded!
They make lovely desk accessories and are great for opera fans.
One of the loveliest elements of this series is that there is a paragraph about the history of the opera on the reverse.
Note the gilded "P" next to the Fornasetti logo signifies that this piece was approved by the studio.
