Inspired by the success of the "Spalted Supreme" table (exhibited at IDS12) Don Howell has created a new sibling for this family of masterworks.

A thick and very figured slice of ailanthus wood is stabilized by two hand-carved figurative butterfly joints.

Normally this woodworking construction feature is shaped in an elongated bow-tie form.

Don Howell demonstrates his creativity and mastery of carving by creating figurative walnut joints; here a tree and an owl in flight with its full wing-span. These elements are not painted or marquetry, but solid carvings in both walnut and the negative space of the table.

While the top is impressive, the "Barred Owl Table" shows Don's signature style for the base, composed of cross bars set at obtuse angles. (It is considerably more challenging to cut a mortice at an odd angle)

This is a remarkable table that is sculptural, decorative and fine example of contemporary wood-working mastery.

Interestingly, ailanthus is a rare type of wood that only grows in the vicinity of New York City. It is the same species of tree described in the classic book "A Tree Grows in Brooklyn"

About the designer: Don Howell’s first career was in the fashion world, including being a Design Director at John Varvatos for 9 years. In 2009, he resigned from this major position in order to dedicate himself to the creation of studio furniture.

An expert craftsman, Howell has spent the last few years refining his techniques and aesthetic, slowly hand-making heirloom-quality furniture for his friends and family using the finest hardwoods and burls.

Caviar20 is honored to be representing Howell’s furniture creations.
