DON HOWELL "CEDAR + SPINDLE CONSOLE " 2012
Don Howell's latest creation is this delicate yet confident cedar-topped console.
This sculptural but useful table demonstrates a convergence of contemporary woodworking, mid-century detail and antique elements.
Howell chose a beautiful and highly grained piece of cedar for the surface. The single cedar plank rests on a group of reclaimed antique oiled-mahogany spindles.
The overall structure is stabilized by a brass cross member evocative of some of Paul McCobb's mid-century designs.
The result is a striking piece of furniture that uses repurposed antiques, is highly practical and aesthetically impressive.
Don Howell’s first career was in the fashion world, including being a Design Director at John Varvatos for 9 years. In 2009, he resigned from this major position in order to dedicate himself to the creation of studio furniture.
An expert craftsman, Howell has spent the last few years refining his techniques and aesthetic, slowly hand-making heirloom-quality furniture for his friends and family using the finest hardwoods and burls.
Caviar20 is honored to be representing Howell’s furniture creations.
