FELIX GONZALES-TORRES "MEMORIAL DAY WEEKEND" 1989
Felix Gonzales-Torres (1957-1996) is widely known for his quiet yet striking sculptures and installations.
Cuban-born and openly gay, Torres' involvement in cultural and political issues influenced his thematic exploration in the relationship between the public and private areas of life today.
Torres often communicates with a voice of activism in passive and subtle ways that have become highly influential. A noteworthy example is his 24 billboards installed in NYC; a photograph of an unmade bed with the imprints of two bodies. The piece was one of the many that highlighted the silent but agonizing effects of AIDS.
Gonzales-Torres has been exhibited across the world in some of the most prestigious venues: the Whitney Biennial (1991), the Sydney Biennial (1996), and the Venice Biennial (1993). Retrospectives of his work have been held at the Guggenheim and the Museum of Contemporary Art Los Angeles. His public work has also been hosted in Brussels, Seoul, Hannover, and Frankfurt to name a few.
This work, a multiple that was part of an untitled installation/sculpture known as "Memorial Day Weekend" that is in the permanent collection of the Victoria & Albert Museum in London.
As the V&A explains: The prints were arranged in stacks, continually replenished throughout the duration of the exhibition. The artist intended visitors to help themselves to these prints which they could take... Dissemination of multiples is a characteristic feature of Gonzalez-Torres' exhibitions.

Our inventory is divided between New York and Toronto.
- Where do you ship to?
We can ship anywhere. Typically when we ship within North America we prefer to use FedEx or DHL. To Europe, Asia and beyond we generally use DHL.
- How much does it cost to ship?
For shipments within North America, we typically charge a flat rate fee. Many items on our site will list the rate. For shipping outside of North America, we can easily provide a quote and will look for the most efficient and economical option.
Most of the items on our site can be easily shipped internationally.
Occasionally we will recommend that an artwork be removed from its frame for shipping. Larger framed works are typically framed with plexiglass. We export over 80% of what we sell, so we are comfortable shipping anywhere.
- Are there additional taxes or fees?
When a work is valued above $2,500 usd there is a possibility of tax of 0.35%, but this is applied sporadically. There can similarly be an additional fee for customs brokerage and this can range from $20 - $65. US Taxes, duties and customs brokerage are not included in our flat rate shipping. However most of our shipments to the US enter without any additional fees.
- Do you provide a certificate of authenticity?
Yes, we guarantee everything we sell. We can provide both a digital and printed version of our certificate of authenticity.
What is your return policy?
