ROBERT ACHTEMICHUK "SEPTEMBER 8, 2006 - 10:40PM" 2006
Robert Achtemichuk is a well-known figure in the arts community in Southern Ontario as an arts
administrator, advocate of the arts, teacher and artist.
This image is part of a body of work that was recently exhibited at the Homer Watson House & Gallery (Kitchener) and the Glenhyrst Art Gallery of Brant (Brantford). Working exclusively with gouache, Achtemichuk revived the practice of working “en plein air”...however the works that comprise the collection of “Latitude 43.456193 Longitude -80.500507” were all done from vantage points immediately surrounding the artist’s Kitchener home. Rather than exhaust the subject matter around him, Achtemichuk continued to find inspiration in the variations of light, both natural and artificial. Part of the success of this series are the vibrant and subtle hues that Achtemichuk extracts or highlights in each scene.
Achtemichuk has exhibited across Canada and has taught at some of the nation’s most important institutions including the Art Gallery of Ontario, the University of Manitoba and the University of Toronto. He has also served as the Executive Director of the Canadian Clay & Glass Gallery, Open Studio and the Waterloo Regional Art Council.
