ADOLPH GOTTLIEB "LEVITATION" SCREENPRINT, 1969

$3,500

Compared with his peers (the original Abstract Expressionist posse of Arshile Gorky, Hans Hoffmann, Jackson Pollock and Mark Rothko) Gottlieb arguably created the most iconic and recognizable paintings.

His signature forms include bursts, circles and "labyrinths" - while they appear to be expressionist forms they are often highly symbolic and inspired by primitive art.

While they are the result of gestural painting, they also posses a calm and almost contemplative energy that is often at odds with the work of Gorky, Hoffmann and Pollock (whose canvases can be heavy with angst, aggression and torment)

While in recent years, Adolph Gottlieb has been overshadowed by his friend and colleague Mark Rothko, Gottlieb is still one of the most important and influential American abstract painters...and one of Caviar20's favorites.

This iconic screenprint has the essential elements of a classic Gottlieb: rich monochromatic circular forms juxtaposed with an ambiguous organic shape.

As Gottlieb's paintings are selling for upwards of $2 million, his fine screenprints are a must have for the young collector passionate about American Abstract Expressionism.
