"1917 CAMPAIGN MORETTA" CHAIR BY ZANOTTA
It is pretty impressive that this chair was designed in 1917 by Bernard Marstaller - yet remains functional, fresh and chic.
A paradigm of "Campaign" furniture - typically tables, desk and chairs, that folded flat or disassembled with ease to be used my the military in the field.
As for the origins of the form, variations of this chair first appeared in the late 19th century for the British Military and is sometimes also referred to as a Roorkhee chair.
There have been several interpretations (by Kaare Klint and other Scandinavian designers) as well as descendants that are clearly indebted to the original design- such as Le Corbusier’s “Basculant” chair (1928)
This example from Zanotta's recent reissue was realized in natural canvas, leather and beech.
This is another fine piece of Italian design reissued by Zanotta - one of our favorite furniture manufacturers who have reintroduced designs by both obscure and high profile (notably Carlo Mollino)
The back tilts for maximum comfort.
