CINDY SHERMAN "UNTITLED - SUN TAN", 2003
Since the late 1970's Cindy Sherman has donned an array of personas, disguises and costumes to explore how woman are perceived, presented and judged in Western culture.
In this iconic and evocative work, possibly from the informally titled series Hamptons / Hollywood, Sherman becomes an over-tanned middle-aged California character...vaguely reminiscent of Jennifer Aniston.
A large part of this body of work is on exhibit in the fantastic retrospective of her work entitled "Imitation of Life" at the Broad Museum in Los Angeles. To see the online version of the exhibition click here.
Sherman is one of the most successful living female artists with nearly 20 works that have achieved more than $1 million at auction.
This is a fantastic (and accessible) example of a Cindy Sherman photograph - a perfect entry-level piece to collecting one of the most influential and esteemed artists of the 20th century.
