JENNY HOLZER "WATERBOARD 3" 2012
In 2012 Jenny Holzer returned to painting with her "Top Secret" series.
The artist had discovered a group of redacted US government documents related to the recent/ongoing wars in Afghanistan and Iraq.
Using the documents as the basis for a series of painting and screenprints Holzer replaced the censored components with dense blocks of color, sometimes tutti-frutti sweet, sometimes heavy matte black.
The artworks alluded to both the works of Kazimir Malevich (1879-1935) and Ad Reinhardt - but with the term "Top Secret" emblazoned on each piece the viewer is reminded that the basis of these works are contemporary and political rather than avant-garde historical abstraction.
While Holzer is known for her pubic installations and sculpture, these works continue to provoke the viewer to consider the power structures that surround us - and question how our elected officials communicate with their constituents.
Jenny Holzer is one of the most prominent and original American artists. In 1990 she was the first woman to represent the United States at the Venice Biennale, and won the Leone D'Oro - the event's top honor. This year Holzer was back in Venice with "War Paintings" a major exhibition at the Museo Correr.
This is a rare opportunity to acquire an affordable work by one of the most distinctive artists of the 20th century.
