Nan Goldin (b. 1953) is unquestionably one of the most influential photographers of the 20th century.

In the 1980's she came to fame from documenting her social circle, characters often living on the margins of society, in New York City and beyond.

Goldin was the first to use the "slide show" format in a high-art setting and elevated the familiar snapshot into an art form.

A successor to Diane Arbus, her aesthetic and creative approach had a tremendous impact on both the medium and the art world.

Goldin's influence is particularly strongly manifested in the work of Wolfgang Tillmans and Ryan McGinley.

In the 2000's Goldin's body of work has included more images of landscapes, interiors and objects that allude to intimacy, community and loss.

While the work, like "Joan Crawford on Fire", is populated with fewer characters, the emotions remain just as present.

It is an affordable opportunity to acquire an iconic work by the inimitable Nan Goldin.

Matthew Marks (whose label appears verso) is Goldin's primary representative.
