DON HOWELL "SPALTED SUPREME" COCKTAIL TABLE
"Spalted Supreme" is a new chef d'oeuvre from Don Howell.
Instead of using a traditional butterfly joint, Howell carved a piece of rich American walnut into the image of two birds, one perched and one in flight. This is an impressive feat as it requires the negative space on the Maple stump cut to be carved as well. Caviar20 always admires pieces where the construction elements become decorative features.
Howell found a remarkable piece of Maple for his latest creation. The intricate black ink-like design that covers the Maple stump is the result of spalting, adding another decorative dimension to this work.
Don Howell’s first career was in the fashion world, including 9 years as Design Director at John Varvatos. In 2009, he resigned from this major position to dedicate himself to the creation of studio furniture.
An expert craftsman, Howell has spent the last few years refining his techniques and aesthetic, slowly hand-making heirloom-quality furniture for his friends and family using the finest hardwoods and burls.
Howell surpasses any comparison to Nakashima by supporting the Maple top with a dynamic asymmetrical and overlapping Walnut. The amazing bird joinery aligns Howell with master studio furniture makers such Phil Powell.
