DOROTHY THORPE "AMBER HAND" LUCITE SCULPTURE
Dorothy Thorpe is a paradigm of a mid-century American designer/studio that warrants further scholarship.
While Thorpe is known amongst design enthusiasts for her innovative designs in lucite, research is needed to fully understand her creative evolution and output.
Her tubular lucite candlesticks are a 20th century design icon, yet Dorothy Thorpe has not received adequate attention for her creations.
While she created several successful designs using "tubular" lucite she also created a collection of small sculptures in colored resin/acrylic that reference both devotional objects and ruined Greek masterpieces.
This mysterious and elegant "Amber Hand" sculpture could be based on the remnant of an ancient statue...or a 20th century mannequin part.
