DOUG AND MIKE STARN "SNO3_018" 2006
Doug and Mike Starn (b. 1961) are identical twins working together in an array of medium.
The artists came to international attention after being featured in the Whitney Biennial in 1987.
While the first decade of their career photography was the dominant medium, in recent years they have pushed further into sculpture and installation while still exploring some of the motifs and themes that have always been a part of their work, particularly the metaphoric richness inherent in nature.
Beginning in 2005 the Starns began photographing snowflakes as part of the acclaimed series alleverythingthatisyou, 2006-2007. The twins were both paying homage and reviving some of the innovative photographic practices established by Snowflake Bentley (1835-1931) who was responsible for establishing that every snowflake is unique.
The Starn's images of snowflakes remain their most iconic and sought-after creation.
