ELENA MALKOVA "UNTITLED 1", 2010
Elena Malkova is an emerging photographer completing her studies in the Image Arts program at Ryerson University in Toronto.
Born in Russia, she was raised in a remote Siberian city and later immigrated to Canada for her education. Her fascination with Canadian urban environments significantly influences her practice.
Her "Chance" series is one of several bodies of work that uses the city as a subject. As Elena explains "The series consists of twelve photographs. Each is a condition where chance can perform. In order to minimize predictability, the project was shot completely on a 4x5 view camera where the viewing glass is not accessible at the moment of releasing the shutter. Therefore the photographer's control over the experiment is limited. Fabrics were thrown into the air and were "free" for about two seconds, when the chance could be observed and was frozen by the camera."
