ETTORE SOTTSASS FOR BITOSSI "HOLLYWOOD" CENTERPIECE
If you put Ettore Sottsass and Gio Ponti in the boxing ring together...who would you root for?
We would argue Sottsass; his designs were more audacious, more iconic and more extravagant.
Of course, not everything in his oeuvre is as wacky as Memphis.
Let's not forget his Olivetti typewriter, his Totems, the chairs for Knoll and of course his ceramics for Bitossi.
Sottsass began designing for the notable Italian ceramic company in the mid-1950's.
This centerpiece and its avant-garde siblings in black & white date from around 1958.
Often referred to as the "Hollywood Collection", the forms and patterns are a clear precursor to the colorful work Sottsass creates under the Memphis banner nearly 25 years later.
As for the production chronology of this ceramic centerpiece, there have been two generations of reissues first in 1986 and then again after Sottsass' death in 2007.
This example is from the former period and remains in excellent condition.
