Who is the most important Italian designer from the 20th century?

Would you vote for Gio Ponti, Joe Colombo, Carlo Mollino or Ettore Sottsass?

We would argue Sottsass; his designs were most audacious, more iconic and extravagant...and most memorable.

Of course, not everything in his oeuvre is as wacky as Memphis.

Let's not forget his Olivetti typewriter, his Totems, the chairs for Knoll and of course his ceramics for Bitossi and other studios.

His "Shiva" vase is one of his naughtiest and most humorous creations. Surprisingly it was first designed in 1972 for the Spanish firm B.D (Barcelona Design)...not in the years post-Memphis.

Sottsass' inspiration was not sexual - the vase was intended to represent fertility and to be a good omen for the new manufacturer.

Ettore Sottsass (1917-2007) is certainly Caviar20's favorite Italian designer. We love his ceramics, Memphis lighting and accessories.

For more information on Sottsass' Memphis, Caviar20 recommends this article on the Design Museum (London, UK) website.
