HANS WEGNER 'CHINESE CHAIRS'

$6,500

Hans Wegner's elegant "Chinese Chair" is an important accomplishment in his oeuvre.

First designed in 1944/45 the chair was inspired by the iconic and timeless "Ming" chair with its "yoke back".

Wegner's chair is a synthesis between the essential elements of mid-century Scandinavian design and 16th century Chinese furniture.

Perhaps even most significant is that the scale and details, such as the arched and planed back rail, that Wegner establishes here and expanded with his superstar "Wishbone" chair.

Both of these Wegner chairs have been in constant production for over sixty years.

While the "Wishbone" has become ubiquitous and endlessly copied its older Asian sibling has continued to be a sought-after example of Wegner's genius.

Today, Fritz Hansen still produces the chair and is available in a handful of timbres - yet the earliest examples were only created in Rosewood and Mahogany.

In November 2013, Wright in Chicago auctioned a pair in Rosewood for $23,750

This pair crafted from Mahogany dates from the early 1970's and has the original webbing and labels.

Caviar20 great design and great value.
