JEAN GUMPPER "EXUBERANCE" 2004

$2,250

Jean Gumpper’s amazingly textured and richly colored works are testament to why printmakers choose to work with woodblock. Jean finds parallels between the medium and the subject matter: “The carving of the woodblock and the layering of the ink, echo natural processes such as erosion and the strata of leaves, water, trees and light”.

While Jean is the only US-based artist exhibited at the Walper Hotel, her aesthetic and the spirit of her work has an undeniably Canadian flavor, both the Group of Seven and the Beaver Hall Group come to mind.

Jean earned her B.F.A, magna cum laude, from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor and while her M.F.A. is from the University of Wisconsin, Madison. She received a Visual Artist Fellowship Award from the Colorado Council on the Arts and is currently based in Chipita Park, Colorado. Her works are in the collections of the Cranbrook Institute of Art, Bloomfield Hills, MI; the Colorado Springs Fine Arts Center; CO; Rocky Mountain National Park, CO; and the Springfield Art Museum, Springfield, MO.
