KAREL APPEL "BEDIZED PUDDING" 1979
Karel Appel (1921-2006) was an important abstract painter and one of the founders of the COBRA movement.
In the late 1940's and 50's his work, along with his colleagues, was strongly rejected in Holland forcing him to relocate to Denmark where he was embraced with much enthusiasm, eventually settling in Paris.
Gradually he would achieve international recognition for his expressive and naive figuration and boldly colored abstraction.
This work, from the "Bedized Pudding" portfolio, printed and published outside of Toronto, is slightly more figurative and surrealist than his typical work. Yet posses the whimsy and incredibly vibrant palette that Appel is known for.
