PIERO DORAZIO "STROKES" LITHO, 1979
Piero Dorazio (1927- 2005) was an important contributor to Italian Modernism.
His aesthetic had more in common with his American contemporaries than this own countrymen.
The New York Times applauded his paintings "that asserted vivid color and simplified, often geometrically ordered design...working with the tension between lyrical sensuality and formalist rigor"
Dorazio was friends with many of the Abstract Expressionists in the US and was invited to teach at Harvard University in 1953. He would return to the United States in 1961, staying for 8 years and teaching at the the Graduate School of Fine Arts at Penn.
He has an impressive international exhibition history; with major showings at the Venice Biennale and The Musée d'Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris to mention a few. The André Emmerich Gallery (New York City) represented him for decades.
During the 1970's Dorazio produced a fantastic body of multiples. They have remained very "fresh" and are ideal for young collectors interested in the evolution of abstraction.
