SILAS SEANDEL "MAGIC FLUTE" TABLE, CIRCA 1970
Silas Seandel's works are paradigms of functional art.
Along with other American artist/designers of his generation, such as Harry Bertoia and Paul Evans, Seandel is a master of metal furniture.
This cocktail table is a fantastic example of his practice, pierced steel tubes are expertly gilded and welded together in a harmonious arrangement. It is an excellent variation from his most desirable series of "Cathedral" tables. The glass top could be easily removed and the base could stand on it's own as sculpture.
Now in his 70s Seandel still works in his large studio in Chelsea neighboring some of the most important New York galleries. Seandel is still active but only takes private commissions. Examples of his work from the same era can be found on 1stdibs.com in the $3,000-8,000 (and beyond) price range.
For further reading, Caviar20 recommends the book "Modern Americana: From High Craft to High Glam" by Todd Merrill for its generous chapter on Silas Seandel.
