SOREL ETROG "LA HINGES 2" DRAWING, 1980

$3,000

Sorel Etrog (1933-2014) had an important relationship with the city of Los Angeles. During the 1960's he had two solo exhibitions at the Felix Landau Gallery.

And even more impressive were his public sculptures in the city; the Los Angeles County Museum acquired the mammoth "Moses" (which measures over 17 ft tall) and the Art Gallery of the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) has "War Remembrance" on permanent display in their garden.

Despite this success and prominence Etrog was absent in LA for nearly a decade. However in 1980 he returned to California and had two exhibitions at the Mekler Gallery and the Tobey C. Moss Gallery.

Etrog was in Los Angeles for both of the exhibitions. This was an exciting time for the city as in September they began to celebrate their bicentennial Etrog completed drawings inspired by LA's birthday. This drawing, as well as some others on our site were both the inspiration and continuation of Etrog's "Steel Construction" series.

This drawing encapsulates several the ideas and inspirations of 1980; the energy and optimism of LA during the bicentennial and the evolution of a new body of work; the Steel Constructions.

We are particularly excited about these drawings; the forms are familiar and evocative of Etrog's work but the palette is somewhat of an anomaly in his oeuvre with its saturated jewel tones and neon shades.

Sorel Etrog's (1933-2014) work can be found in numerous museum and private collections including the Tate, the AGO, the Guggenheim, the Musée d'Art Moderne (Paris) and many others. .
