SOREL ETROG "KEY HEAD COUPLE " DRAWING, 1967
For many, the first introduction to Sorel Etrog is through sculpture -whether one of his large scale public pieces or a sculpture in a home or major gallery.
Bronze, with its dark color and patina immediately gives its form a gravitas and mood.
One of the most interesting elements of Sorel Etrog's works on paper is that while the forms mirror those found in his sculpture, the prints and drawings, because of their palette, have a very different vibe.
The "Mother & Child" is a frequent motif in Etrog's oeuvre. Yet here, Etrog specifically distinguished that these two forms were united as a "couple".
This is an exceptional work in that it is instantly recognizable as Sorel Etrog - yet it depicts a sensuality and romance that is infrequent in his output.
Sorel Etrog's (1933-2014) work can be found in numerous museum and private collections including the Tate, the AGO and LACMA.
His public sculptures can be found on iconic corners in Toronto, Montreal, Israel and beyond.
