The obelisk is a form that has been exalted for nearly 4000 years.
In ancient Egypt and later in Rome, the giant form was often associated with worship and reverence of deities and rulers.
Today the city of Rome remains the home of the greatest number of ancient obelisks, several measuring over 50 ft tall.
In the 19th century when European explorers began to excavate (and pillage) Egyptian sites, obelisks of various sizes were relocated to the West.
Most notably are the pair of Cleopatra Needles in New York City (Central Park) and London (Victoria Embankment) which measure at over 68 ft tall and were created in 1450 BC.
During the 19th century many new obelisks were created, although they began to symbolize timelessness and thus became an appropriate memorial symbol.
In recent years, table top obelisks have become popular (again) as decorative items.
Designers such as Kelly Wearstler, or others experimenting with Hollywood Regency, have taken inspiration from Neoclassical or English Regency design.
We love the combination of history and whimsy - and the fantastic tangerine color of this example.
