TOM WESSELMANN "SEASCAPE" PORCELAIN, 1984
In the early 1980's Rosenthal, the famed German porcelain factory, began commissioning leading artists of the day to produce limited edition art pieces.
Tom Wesselmann's (1931-2004) impressive creation for Rosenthal is a large relief plaque with one of his signature nudes reduced to a selection of abstract forms.
Wesselmann remains one of the most iconic, collected..and sexy American Pop artists.
Yet during the movement's key years Wesselmann was ambivalent if not critical of his association with Pop Art and by the mid 1960's he would be increasingly focusing on nudes, which would become his signature motif. The artist once said “Painting, sex, and humor are the most important things in my life."
In recent years Wesselmann's multiples have become sought-after by collectors internationally. This is a rare example of an iconic image at a price point below $7,500.
