TONY SCHERMAN "WITCH #1" PAINTING, 1995
Throughout his illustrious and dynamic career Tony Scherman (b. 1950) has used classic literature to create striking bodies of work. Some of Scherman's most iconic works are portraits of characters from texts such as The Odyssey or The Seduction of Oedipus.
In the 1990's Scherman embarked on a series based on Shakespeare's masterpiece "Macbeth" entitled "Banquo's Funeral". In this group of paintings Scherman speculates on the narrative that may have unfolded at the funeral service for Banquo...should Shakespeare have included it in the play.
Thus Scherman creates what can be described as a ‘meta-plot’ – a fiction within fiction.
The Witches are arguably one of the most famous and memorable elements in Macbeth. Not surprisingly, Scherman has realized these characters not only in the mid 1990's but again in 2005.
He depicts the Witches as a single woman at three different points in her life; youth, motherhood and finally aged. This work, the study for Witch #1 is an overtly erotic depiction of this woman with her open mouth, cherry red lips and her neck arched backwards...suggesting pleasure, seduction or ecstasy...or something menacing?
Scherman's recent works, notably the series "Difficult Women" have depicted controversial, inspirational female figures. This work, nearly 20 years old, is a paradigm of his practice in both form and content. Scherman is one of the few living artists working in encaustic (one of the most difficult medium to work in).
Tony Scherman’s work can be found in nearly every public collection in Canada, as well as many international museums including LACMA (Los Angeles) and Centre Pompidou (Paris)
