VANESSA BEECROFT "VB 55.52.VB." PHOTO, 2005
Vanessa Beecroft (b.1969) is an accomplishment (in not infamous) Los Angeles-based Italian artist who is noted for using the live female form in her works that are a cross between installation and performance.
Beecroft came to international attention in the early 90's through her works that presented groups of nearly naked women on display in museum settings. Simultaneously conceptual and confrontational the performances raised potent questions about the female form in Art History, the "gaze", objectification and voyeurism. These performances occurred in some of the most prestigious art world venues including the Venice Biennale, the Guggenheim (NYC) and the Gagosian Gallery (London).
Beecroft documents and records the performances. This work is the result of one of her largest performances which occurred at the Neue Nationalgalerie (Berlin) in 2005. It contained 100 women clad in only pantyhose on display in the museum's lobby over the course of 3 hours.
In the period after this legendary performance Beecroft started to retreat from the art world ending her relationship with her blue chip galleries. Since 2008 she has become an essential collaborator with Kanye West - click here to read about this fascinating creative relationship.
As Beecroft has released virtually no works for the market in over a decade, this photograph is quite rare.
