Wayland Gregory (1905-1971) is one of our favorite, and most eccentric, American ceramic artists of the 20th century.

Gregory was an artistic prodigy and mastered sculpture while still an adolescent. During the 1920's he worked for Cowan Studio designing numerous table-top sculptures that were influenced by the aesthetic of the day.

The Depression has a positive outcome for Gregory, despite the closure of Cowan Studio. In 1932, Gregory became an Artist-in-Residence at Cranbrook Academy of Art where he was able to evolve his craft and have access to studios for experimentation and evolution.

During the 40's and beyond Gregory made charming smaller decorative pieces for the leading American retailers of the day including Tiffany & Co., Neimann Marcus and Saks Fifth Avenue to mention a few.

This adorable little "Fish Dish" is evocative of Gregory's playful glam style.
