JOSEF ALBERS "EITHER/OR" SERIGRAPH, 1973

$2,450

"Either/Or" is a fantastic and rare piece from Josef Albers. Highly collectible, this is an ideal piece for both a young collector and an essential work for a serious Albers (or rare book) collection.

In 1973, York University (Toronto) awarded Albers and his wife Anni honorary Doctorate degrees. In celebration of this honor, the Art Gallery at York University published an accompanying catalogue "Homage to Josef Albers" for the concurrent exhibition of his work. The catalog included a hand-signed serigraph of one of Albers' iconic squares.

Josef Albers (1888-1976) is affiliated with, or an active participant within numerous movements that have defined visual culture in the 20th century. Albers was a student and later a professor at the Bauhaus in Germany. After the prestigious academy was closed by the Nazis, Albers and his wife Anni (a noted textile designer) emigrated to the United States. While Albers is best known for his series “Homage to the Square”, he was a significant mentor and taught major artists including Robert Rauchenberg, Cy Twombly and Eve Hesse at Black Mountain College and Yale.

Art Historians credit Albers for fusing elements of American and European abstraction while influencing minimalism, hard-edge painting and Op art. This serigraph, in a bold, saturated red color, is a perfect representation of his aesthetic and his contribution to 20th century abstraction.

It is quite rare to find these serigraphs with original catalogue included.
