Nan Goldin (b. 1953) is unquestionably one of the most influential photographers of the 20th century.

A successor to Diane Arbus, her aesthetic and creative approach has had a tremendous impact on both the medium and the art world. For example, Goldin was the first to use the "slide show" format in a high-art setting.

Her career began in the 1970's, as she took candid shots of her lovers and friends. In the 1980's she further documented her social circle, characters often living on the margins of society, in New York City and beyond.

"Joey" is one of Goldin's favorite subjects, appearing in at least a dozen published images. Beginning in 1990 and well into the 2000's Goldin photographed Joey in New York, Berlin, Pairs and the Hamptons. Click here and here to see other images of Joey over the years.

The location of this work, Sag Harbor, is in the Hamptons.

This work was likely a unique print given as a gift.
