General Idea formed in 1969 in Toronto and over the next 30 some years, the trio made a remarkable and inimitable contribution to post-modern art, in Canada and abroad. 

With their subversive approach and interest in parody and appropriation, General Idea addressed a broad range of social (and art world) issues including consumerism, pharmaceuticals, pageantry and the cult of the artist.

Like a strange parody of 1950's cocktail culture, “Magic Palette” was created by General Idea for the Boutique at the 1984 Miss General Idea Pavilion. The kiosk, designed as a “cultural lab,” introduced and promoted a series of cocktails— each one questioning consumerism in both the art and pharmaceutical industries. The set is accompanied by a singed and numbered copy of "The Getting into the Spirits: Cocktail Book" (another cult object from GI that was available at their Boutique.

Implicating the audience as host, GI hoped that their art elixirs would have the same potency as the pharmaceutical industry in their ability to get “under the skin.”
