HAROLD TOWN "GO-CART" INK DRAWING, 1959

Harold Town (1924-1990) remains one of the most fascinating characters from the "Painters Eleven" group.

While Town coined the group's name (based on the number of artists who simply attended their first meeting) his output was diverse and ever-changing.

Town's first significant body of work, which established his reputation, was a group of monoprints - which he called "Single Autographic Prints". Despite his success as a print-maker Town did not limit himself to one medium. He was an accomplished painter and his works during the prime of Painters Eleven were some of the most bombastic and glorious that the group produced.

This intimate ink drawing is an interesting gem. Similar to Philip Guston, Town seems to be straddling a division between figuration and abstraction.

The complete title of this drawing is "The Solid Rock Go-Cart (A Sculpture)" - it is fantastical and a bit absurd. It posses both traces of automatic abstraction and planned whimsy.

A wonderful unique work for both the serious Town/Painters Eleven collector or the young and aspirational.
