Joyce Wieland (1931-1998) is one of the most accomplished and versatile Canadian artists. She achieved a level of commercial and critical success in her lifetime that was exceptional for a woman in her era in a male-dominated field.

Today her reputation is often eclipsed by her former husband, Michael Snow. Wieland would meet him around 1953 after she was hired at Graphic Associates - a noted company that produced various types of animation. (Michael Snow and Graham Coughtry were also employed there) Snow, as well as her other colleagues would play an important part of Wieland's artistic development as she became exposed to European artists such as Picasso, Duchamp, Miro as well as Louise Nevelson.

While Wieland's approach to art making, and her aesthetic in general, was perpetually evolving, one constant was her passion for drawing. All biographies of the artist have noted that she was always sketching, doodling and drawing. While Wieland frequently depicted herself, whether stylized or cartoon-like, drawings of friends and lovers were less common.

This extremely rare drawing of Michael Snow is a fine example of Wieland's works on paper.

Joyce Wieland works can be found in numerous public collections across Canada including the National Gallery, Museum London and the Art Gallery of Ontario (Toronto) to mention a few.
