SOREL ETROG "NEON LANDSCAPE" SCREENPRINT, 1998

$1,650

Sorel Etrog (1933-2014) worked actively in printmaking throughout his dynamic and prolific career. He experimented with an wide range of processes including etching, silkscreen and lithography while working with publishers and studios around the world.

Etrog was based in Toronto for most of his career, yet it wasn't until the late 1990's that he worked with a print workshop in his adopted home town.

Open Studios would eventually create two prints with the renowned sculptor. (Open Studios is the premiere printing atelier in Canada and has worked with numerous artists ranging from Joanne Tod to General Idea)

One of the works, entitled "Two Calligraphic Figures" was first created in 1969. Nearly 40 years later, Etrog chose this emblematic work as the basis of a new silkscreen.

The second work, now offered here, is a highly stylized original landscape, and is slightly more unexpected. It is rare in Etrog's oeuvre to have an uninhabited landscape, one that is void of characters and while it is expressionistic it is simultaneously fairly straightforward. Unlike some of the previous settings created in two-dimensions by the artist, this landscape is simple and serene, almost Arcadia-like with its giant tree in the foreground.

During Etrog's lifetime there was little commercial emphasis placed on his works on paper. Today as a new generation of collectors embrace his work, more appreciation, scholarship and exhibition is focusing on this important part of his output.

This print in particular, in a very small edition, has not been on the market in nearly 25 years. We thank Open Studios for help cataloging it.
