Throughout her illustrious and dynamic career, Cindy Sherman has impersonated a vast number of female characters ranging from weary bus passengers to haughty society ladies.

There is an inherent proximity to "drag" in Sherman's practice. Yet remarkably, with the exception of her Old Master works from the 1990's, Sherman has only disguised herself as a man in a very small number of images.

This work, "Doctor and Nurse" is one of those exceptional occurrences, where the artist becomes both a male and female character.

Similar to her iconic "Untitled Film Stills" Sherman demonstrates a playful subversiveness as she becomes mid-century archetypes; the serious poised doctor and the pretty airy nurse. The portraits are evocative of commercial portraiture used in public institutions to proudly identify their professional staff.

During the 1980's Sherman explored how women are depicted in visual culture, whether that be in cinema, fashion magazines, art history, and here in a professional realm. This is a particularly important and meaningful image to the artist. She released three variations of the Doctor & Nurse. This is the earliest of the three versions and is signed, numbered and dated.
