Marina Abramovic

MARINA ABRAMOVIC "BALKAN EROTIC EPIC", 2005

The inimitable Marina Abramović is a Serbian-born performance-artist whose pioneering work has pushed the limits of the mind and body, and the relationship between artist and audience.

Her acclaimed performances, in which she often uses her body as both the medium and subject, have earned her global recognition and made her one of the worlds most admired artists.

Marina Abramović’s body of work was celebrated in a major retrospective at MoMA in 2010, during which she exhibited her most publicized (and intense) performance “The Artist is Present”. Sitting still for a total of 736.5 hours over three months, the artist drew thousands of visitors who waited hours in line to sit across from her in silence 1-on-1. The HBO Documentary “Marina Abramović:The Artist is Present” chronicled Marina’s process leading up to and during the performance.

Few artists (living or dead) have entered the pop culture sphere like Marina Abramović. Whether giving TEDTalks, training Lady GaGa, or collaborating on Givenchy couture shows, Abramović’s magnetism and widespread influence is undeniable.

Unlike other artists who rest on their laurels once they achieve a certain level of success, Abramović continues to push her practice. Arguably her best work has been done in the last 20 years or so.

This photograph is a film still from Abramović’s multi-channel installation “Balkan Erotic Epic” from 2005. This personal series of works is based on Marina’s research into her native country’s Balkan folklore and its use of the erotic.

Through consulting old manuscripts, the artist analyzed medieval pagan rituals rooted in Slavic culture since the Middle Ages. She discovered that nudity had a very important function, linked especially to the rites of nature for fertility of the land and the emergence of rain.

It was through eroticism that humans tried to make themselves equal with the gods. She explains that “in folklore, the woman marrying the sun or the man marrying the moon is to preserve the secret of the creative energy and to get in touch through eroticism with indestructible cosmic forces.” This body of work is a perfect example of Abramović’s fearless performance style which often has roots in the mystic and human body. Challenging western cultures vulgarization of the naked body, the artist and her fellow performers shamelessly celebrate their ancient Slavic culture.
