Prolific and polemic, William Ronald (1926-1998) is one of the most accomplished, collected and prolific artists associated with the Painters Eleven group.

For Ronald, the 1960's can be characterized as his most volatile and shifting period. On one hand, the onset of the decade propelled his critical and commercial success in New York City. In 1961 one of his canvases was featured in the Guggenheim exhibition "American Abstract Expressionists and Imagists". The museum already owned one of Ronald's paintings and this inclusion was further validation of his relevancy in the field.

Sadly, in 1963, the year of this jubilant watercolor, shortly after his third solo exhibition at the Kootz Gallery, Ronald would part ways with the gallery. Ronald would then leave New York and return to Toronto around 1964. A year later Ronald begins showing with the David Mirvish Gallery and starts a parallel career as a host, on television and on radio, with the CBC.

Ronald is at his best when he aggressively or uninhibitedly uses color. This watercolor captures that energy through the urgency of its palette - mercury red, fuchsia, marigold each contrasted or reinforced with aquatic grey, blue and green.

This intimate jewel-like work is a paradigm of Ronald's exuberance and color dynamism evocative of his well-admired time in New York City.
