DON HOWELL "RIVER CHAISE" WALNUT, 2013
Inspired by the classic Muskoka (or Adirondack) wooden arm-chair, Don Howell's "River Chaise" is a bold interpretation of the cottage-country classic.
Howell's version has a dramatic sculptural presence that evokes African sculpture.
Yet the form was shaped by ergonomics (rather than pure aesthetics) and is remarkably comfortable.
Impressive enough to be kept indoors, "River Chaise" was first conceived as a dramatic lounge chair for his summer home in upstate New York. (Which was photographed and appeared in the October 2012 issue of Canadian House & Home)
Howell experimented and created prototypes in reclaimed cedar and ipê (shown in the last two images) before finalizing the design with walnut.
The "River Chaise" is made-to-order and can be created in a highly-figured or subtle grain of American walnut.
