FORNASETTI "MAN IN SPACE" 9.5" PLATE 2, 1966
During his heyday Fornasetti was commissioned by major companies to produce exclusive pieces for various promotional reasons, such as holiday gifts.
Today, these unique (often highly idiosyncratic) designs are coveted by collectors since they were not available commercially and produced in small quantities. These designs were also of subject matter that was often atypical for Fornasetti.
Fornasetti produced such specific designs for companies including Alitalia, Alfa Romeo and Neiman Marcus to mention a few.
This plate is the sixth example from "L'homme dans l'espace" (Man in Space) produced for the noted French magazine Paris Match in December 1966.
Fornasetti produced six designs for this series (although there were variations of the six with several having hand-colored elements).
This example, "L'histoire" (History) notes the astronauts who approached or landed on the moon between 1961 and 1966. This very graphic design with an op art quality is simultaneously decorative and educational.
Caviar20 is pleased to be offering this (and a second) example from this very rare collection.
