RIRKRIT TIRAVANIJA "PRINT MO' MONEY" 2011
Rirkrit Tiravanija (b. 1961) is a Thai-born artist and pioneer of relational aesthetics. He is best known for his immersive and participatory installations that explore themes of community, inclusion, and collective experiences.
Tiravanija's practice redefined the boundaries of contemporary art, embracing experiential interactions over physical objects. Some of the artist's most cherished projects transform galleries and art institutions into shared environments, inviting participants to connect through communal experiences such as cooking, eating, and conversation.
Grounded in the principles of relational aesthetics, Tiravanija's approach defines the artwork through intangible outcomes, placing value on organic encounters and results between parties. With their immersive nature, his projects blur the line between art and life, engaging with and interrogating systems of power that shape our reality.
In this work, Tiravanija inscribes the details of a $100,000 bill onto the surface of a copper etching plate. The text is inverted as if manufactured to print facsimiles of the inflated denomination, calling into question the arbitrary nature of value within art, commerce, and beyond.
Today, Rirkrit Tiravanija's works are featured in esteemed collections worldwide, including the Museum of Modern Art (New York), the Tate (London), and the Centre Pompidou (Paris).
