Andy Warhol

ANDY WARHOL "RYUICHI SAKAMOTO" LITHOGRAPH, 1984

It is no secret that Andy Warhol (1928-1987) was fascinated by fame, especially when possessed by beautiful people.

Since the early 1960's, Warhol’s work repeatedly revolved around famous females.

This portrait is exceptionally rare as it features a (famous) Asian man;  the handsome famed Japanese composer and musician Ryuichi Sakamoto (b.1952).

Sakamoto achieved international recognition as both a solo artist and co-founder of the Japanese electronic band Yellow Magic Orchestra (YMO). Formed in the late 70's, YMO along with Sakamoto's solo albums were influential innovators of the electronic music scene. They pioneered the use of synthesizers and digital recording techniques preempting the electropop boom of the 1980's.

Sakamoto went on to become a prolific composer, pianist, songwriter, record producer, activist and actor. His work scoring films, like The Revenant (2015) and The Last Emperor (1987), have earned him multiple Golden Globes, Grammy's, BAFTA's, and an Academy Award.

This work is evocative of Warhol's portraits from the 1980's. Like many of his images from this era, Warhol incorporated hand-drawing (later printed) to enhance the contouring and details of Sakamoto's face. Created at the height of Sakamoto's YMO and solo album fame, Warhol immortalized Sakamoto's beauty in a series of printed portraits.

This portrait was incorporated into an advertisement Warhol created for Suntory Whisky, one of the first Japanese alcohol brands to advertise in America. During the 80's art and commerce often overlapped, with Warhol designing many product advertising campaigns.

The Tate museum in London possess this lithograph along with several other examples of Warhol's portraits of Sakamoto.

As the Warhol market continues to ascend, there are fewer and fewer examples of fine entry-level pieces.
