Lizz Aston
LIZZ ASTON "CASCADE" 2018
Caviar20 has long admired Lizz Aston's evolving career and body of work.
We are pleased to be offering her incredible creations.
Aston's practice is inspired by the history and production of textiles and decorative arts. She frequently adopts an anonymous textile pattern, such as a hand-made lace doily, and then manipulates it digitally before creating a new contemporary descendant. These transformed and augmented patterns are then hand-cut on fine Japanese Kozo paper (aka mulberry paper) which are then painted, stained or dyed.
"Cascade" is a paradigm of Lizz Aston's work. One can identify, in the upper right section of the form, and intricate and "traditional" decorative element that has been gradually and meticulously distorted. It appears that the lower core of the form is mutating and crawling away from its historical composition. To amplify the form's impressive structure and presence Aston elevates the cut-out with an array of pins creating dramatic shadows.
Technical and interpretive comments aside, Aston is also an exceptional colorist. Her creations revel in their subtle ombrés and rich hues that lead the viewer to question what material is actually on display.
In addition to several impressive grants, residencies and exhibitions, Aston has collaborated with or produced commissioned pieces for H&M, Holt Renfrew and 3M.
