Harold Town
HAROLD TOWN "SWATCH #2" PAINTING, 1987
Harold Town (1924-1990) remains one of the best-known and most intriguing artists from the "Painters Eleven" group.
Town's reputation was established in the late 1950s with a series of unique prints ("Single Autographic Prints") that included collage elements. In 1956, he represented Canada at the Venice Biennale with these works. Over the following decades, the artist continued to reinvent his aesthetic, regularly changing medium and mood.
This exuberant and vibrant painting is from the last chapter of the artist's career. It is remarkably contemporary looking despite being close to 40 years old. It is a reminder of Harold Town's unrivalled command of color. This work entitled "Swatch #2" is a fascinating balance between spontaneity and structure. We can imagine that Town first created a skeleton or outline in graphite dominated by bulbous oval forms, which recall Ken Price's sculpture. Then the artist carefully added controlled dollops of an array of colors to each section.
Today, Town's work is represented in prestigious collections across North America including the Art Gallery of Ontario, the Museum of Modern Art (New York), and the Guggenheim (New York).
