Helen Frankenthaler
HELEN FRANKENTHALER "A LITTLE ZEN" COLOR POCHOIR, 1970
Helen Frankenthaler (1928-2011) is one of the most revered and influential abstract painters of the 20th century in addition to being one of the most successful and collected female artists.
Frankenthaler was a key player in the evolution of Abstract Expressionism. Elaborating on techniques made famous by Jackson Pollock, specifically pouring paint directly onto (frequently) unprimed canvas, Frankenthaler led the next major movement in American abstraction: Color Field painting.
The artist was a prolific and experimental printmaker. She worked with lithography, etchings, woodcuts, and screenprints. This work, like many in her oeuvre, was created through an elaborate process using several different printmaking techniques.
"A Little Zen" comes from Frankthaler's aptly named series, "Four Pochoirs". This distinct body of work employs pochoir, a printmaking technique that involves applying color with a sponge while following the contours of a vinyl stencil. The result leaves a distinct impression for each work, which creates unique variance within the edition.
Featuring swaths of periwinkle, hunter green, and blood orange, "A Little Zen" showcases the delicate forms and the diaphanous quality of Frankenthaler's signature color fields. This important screenprint serves as an excellent example of her passion for printmaking.
Frankenthaler has exhibited internationally and is represented in numerous major collections including the MoMA (New York), the Tate (London), and the National Gallery of Art (Washington).
