Helen Frankenthaler
HELEN FRANKENTHALER "ALASKA" SCREENPRINT, 1989
Helen Frankenthaler (1928-2011) is one of the most revered and influential abstract painters of the 20th century in addition to being one of the most successful and collected female artists. Her current auction record is $7.8 million USD.
Frankenthaler was a key player in the evolution of Abstract Expressionism. Elaborating on techniques made famous by Jackson Pollock, specifically pouring paint directly onto (frequently) unprimed canvas, Frankenthaler led the next major movement in American abstraction: Color Field painting.
The artist was a prolific and experimental printmaker. She worked with lithography, etchings, woodcuts, and screenprints.
In 1984, the renowned Mexico City-based printer Mixografía opened their LA studio, and shortly thereafter Frankenthaler began collaborating with them.
Together, Frankenthaler created six large-scale prints using Mixografia's unique relief print technique on custom-made paper. "Alaska" is a fantastic output from this era of production, showcasing the incredible texture and dimensionality of the medium.
Set on a muted pistachio/sage green backdrop, "Alaska" hosts a series of dynamic, tactile forms and line work realized in shades of pearl, canary yellow, baby pink, and teal. The composition is accelerated by Frankenthaler's masterful use of negative space which offers stretches of pistachio that showcase the physicality quality of the paper. Typical of the works created by Mixografia, this piece has an incredible depth and texture. While it sounds cliched, this work is best appreciated in person. Many collectors well-versed in print-making techniques and accomplishments are enamoured by what Frankenthaler was able to create as a multiple.
Frankenthaler has exhibited internationally and is represented in numerous major collections including the MoMA (New York), the Tate (London), and the National Gallery of Art (Washington).
